During
the eighties and early nineties, the shipbreaking activities
were canalized. Registered companies were restricted by Metal
Scrap Trade Corp. Ltd. – a Govt. of India undertaking,
to only 1 ship for dismantling per year.
Nagarsheth Shipbreakers, saw
a real growth from 1992 onwards, when import was permitted under
Open General License (OGL).
We currently have the capacity to dismantle around 50000 tonnes
per year.
The Biggest ship dismantled by us was a VLCC (Very Large Crude
Carrier), M.T. Pelopidas V of about 33521 LDT
Our second biggest ship was the M.V. Niizuru an ore carrier,
which was 28414 LDT.
